Buying a Car

Where to shop

You can search for your new wheels online or in person - either way you have several factors to take into account.

Online
Pros Cons
  • No driving between dealerships
  • Read the reviews
  • No face-to-face negotiation
  • You may not get to test drive

Dealer
Pros Cons
  • Take a test drive
  • The chance to haggle
  • Driving between dealerships
  • Haggling

Test drive

A thorough test-drive is crucial. Even if the car you're after is an update on your current one, there may be some important changes worth knowing about.

Make sure you discuss with the dealer your legal liability when test-driving.

  • Take at least 20 minutes, and drive at least 10km on a variety of roads (suburban streets, arterial roads and, if possible, a highway)
  • Test the steering and vision with a parallel park and u-turn
  • Take a close look at the features and equipment
  • Keep a level head - no matter how nice it feels!
